about

Pasyon - During Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the Philippines, epic chants that recount the Passion, Death, & Resurrection of Jesus Christ are recited continuously until Good Friday afternoon. This traditional folk melody is from one of those chants and when I first heard it, I couldn’t get it out of my head and thought that an Afro-Cuban rumba guaguanco might be a good rhythm bed for the melody to nest in. The use of the Cuban Trés guitar here pays tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, the great pioneer of Cuban music who played this instrument.
